This sedation dentistry medicine will cause the patient to feel relaxed, calm, and even sleepy. If it’s necessary, the patient can usually consume a second pill once they arrive at the dental office. During the procedure, the patients will technically be awake and able to respond, although they won’t remember the process.

With sedation dentistry, you’ll need someone to drop you off and drive you home from your appointment.

What sedation is used for dentistry?
Oral sedation that dentists use include benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines include drugs such as Lorazepam (Ativan), Triazolam (Halcion), Midazolam (Versed), and Diazepam (Valium) to name a few.

Other forms of sedation that can be used at the dentist include IV sedation, general anesthesia, and nitrous oxide. It is important to know that not all dentists offer sedation dentistry and that dentists who do offer sedation, might not offer all kinds.

Ultimately, your dentist will make a reasonable offer for dental sedation, should you need it, based upon the type of procedure you are having done.

What does dental sedation feel like?
Sedation used in dentistry makes patients feel relaxed and drowsy. With oral sedation, you’ll be conscious and awake, which will allow you to respond to requests and answer questions.

On the other end of the spectrum, general anesthesia, is a state of unconsciousness induced by an anesthesiologist. With general anesthesia, you won’t feel anything and, likewise, won’t remember anything.

What happens when you get sedated at the dentist?
Because there are many forms of dental sedation, the outcome for each type is a bit different. Below are brief descriptions as to what you can expect for each type of dental sedation.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is mixed with oxygen and administered via tubing in the nose much like oxygen. This particular type of dental sedation is easily regulated by the dentist and wears off very quickly. Typically, with Nitrous Oxide, you are able to drive yourself home after your procedure.

Oral sedation, requires you to take one pill approximately one hour before your procedure, which will make you very sleepy. Thus, you’ll be relaxed enough to complete any necessary dental treatment. For this type of sedation, you’ll need to have someone drive you to and from your procedure.

IV sedation, offers a slightly different response as the medication will directly enter the bloodstream. This kind of sedation works very quickly and can easily be controlled by your dentist. For this type of sedation you will need a driver to and from your appointment.

General anesthesia is a form of dental sedation in which you will be completely unconscious. Medication will enter your bloodstream through an IV, which is continuously monitored. You will not be awake and will not remember the procedure. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment when you have general anesthesia.

A Message From Dr. Kathryn Alderman: Your Dentist Near Me in Lincoln, NE for Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Kathryn Alderman from dentist near me

Dear anxious patients,

If you need a dentist in Lincoln, NE, I’m glad to help you out. I see a variety of teeth in many different conditions on a daily basis; Part of my job is to be non-judgmental and help people get the dental care they need. It saddens me to hear so many people avoiding the dentist because they are embarrassed about their teeth. My job is to solve any problems at hand and to help you feel better about yourself. If you don’t get check-ups due to embarrassment, it can present a vicious cycle that will only hurt you. The condition of your teeth will only get worse, soon leading to infections and causing you to feel even more embarrassed.

Your overall health is also negatively affected by dental infections. After many years in dentistry, I can say I’ve likely seen a set of teeth that are worse than yours. Dental conditions don’t bother me. Sometimes teeth look worse than they are. Often, they simply need gentle teeth cleaning. These problems can usually be fixed in a short period. No matter the condition of your teeth, my job is to help and advise you. Instead of judging you, I want to make sure your teeth are healthy, and I won’t judge you or make you feel embarrassed. You can rest assured that my office is an embarrassment-free zone.

For those with a dental phobia,

I believe I can change the way you see the dentist in Lincoln, NE. Preserve Family Dentistry aims to help patients with a dental phobia feel completely at ease. I believe compassion is what patients need most, and I work hard to help them feel better about themselves. While some dentists prefer to lecture their clients, I’ll never talk your ear off like that. While some dentists see it as “tough love,” I believe these lectures make patients feel embarrassed. Further, this kind of attitude is far from being compassionate and caring. Instead, I believe in open communication and offering a judgment-free zone. I’ll strive to make dental visits a positive experience for you. No matter the condition of your teeth, you deserve excellent dental care.
